Water has a way of showing us the world differently. It bends, ripples, and reflects – turning trees into abstract shapes, clouds into swirling paintings, and city lights into pools of colour. Get the weather right, and you might even catch a perfect reflection. On long summer days, when the light shifts and stretches, there’s no better time to slow down and notice these small transformations. Bring a camera (or just your phone) and a bit of curiosity. Even a puddle can hold an entirely new perspective.
What to do:
Set off on a walk. Aim for a river, lake, or pond - if you’re in a more urban environment look for puddles, or set off straight after rain.
Keep an eye on the surface of the water and see what reflections appear. You could use your camera to capture the perfect mirror image of a building, tree or mountain, or capture something more surprising by getting closer to the surface of the water, and changing the angle of your camera. Try taking photos of just the reflection, or step back and include it in the wider scene.
If you can’t find any rivers, ponds or puddles you could also try this with a small dish of water, or even a mirror, in your garden or local park. Place the reflective surface in different spots, like under a tree or propped up in a flower bed, to see how your perspective changes.
