Nettle fibre has been used for centuries to make strong, durable string and rope. It's a great skill to learn and an excellent way to connect with nature.
Here’s what you’ll need:
Fresh nettle stems (around 5–10)
Scissors
Gloves
A flat surface to work on
Harvest the nettles: Using gloves, carefully pick the nettles, cutting them near the base. Choose tall, healthy plants.
Prepare the stems: Strip the leaves from the stems. We only need the stems for this, so you can put the leaves in the compost, or blanch and eat them!
Strip the fibres: peel open the stem with your nail. Scrape away the outer layer to reveal the long, tough inner fibres.
Spin the string: Gather a bundle of these fibres and twist them together between your fingers to create string. You can also roll and press along a flat table top. Keep adding more fibres as you twist.
Dry: Hang your string to dry on a pole or clothesline.
