The popular phrase ‘an apple a day…’ has its roots in an old Welsh saying that first appeared in the 19th century - “eat an apple on going to bed, and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread.” Its meaning still rings true today.
The late Dr Michael Mosely dedicated one of his ‘Just one Thing’ episodes to apples. Eating apples regularly can lower the risk of cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.
They’re full of fibre, vitamins, and flavonoids, especially in the skin. The fibre in apples also supports gut health by feeding good bacteria and reducing inflammation. Whether raw or cooked, apples—especially varieties like Pink Lady and Golden Delicious—offer lasting benefits for your gut, heart, and overall health. We’ll be eating one every day this month!
Did you know? There are over 2,500 varieties of apple that grow in the UK.
