Sunrise Walk & Birdsong
The dawn chorus is one of nature's most magical performances, as birds greet the new day with song. Just like an orchestra, different species take turns to sing. Robins, blackbirds, and thrushes are the early risers, setting the stage. As the light grows, they’re joined by woodpigeons, wrens, and warblers. Great tits, blue tits, sparrows, and finches join in once it’s bright enough for them to see.

What do you need?
Comfortable shoes for walking.
A thermos with coffee or tea (optional but comforting).
A pair of binoculars (optional).
A smartphone with the Merlin Bird ID app or similar.
A notebook or phone to jot down the birds you hear.
How to do it.
Set Your Alarm: Aim to wake up around 30–60 minutes before sunrise. This is when the first birds start singing.
Make a Warm Drink: Prepare a coffee or tea to take with you, or simply enjoy the crisp morning air.
Head Outdoors: Find a quiet natural spot like a park, woodland, or even your garden. The fewer distractions, the better.
Listen to the Dawn Chorus: Pay attention to the layers of bird calls. Robins, blackbirds, and thrushes will likely be the first to sing, followed by other species as the light increases.
Use the Merlin App: If you’re curious about what you’re hearing, open the app to identify the bird species by their song.
Optional - Take Notes: Record the birds you’ve identified and any special moments, like a particularly beautiful melody or a stunning sunrise.
Reflect and Enjoy: Take a moment to soak it all in. The combination of birdsong and the rising sun is one of the simplest yet most powerful ways to connect with nature.
