About the Event

We will be a small group of no more than 6 people working first with an axe and then with knives and gouges to slowly transform a little lump of wood into your own spoon.

The course will cover

-Safe practices and good habits when handling knives and axes.

-Axe techniques needed to hew a spoon blank with an axe.

-Introduction to traditional 'sloyd' knife grips with straight and spoon knife.

-Illustration of wood grain and cut directions.

You will make your own spoon blank hewn from a split branch using the axe and practice the knife grips to refine your spoon.

We will also have gouges to form the bowl which is a very rewarding tool to use.

Course Suitability. This course is suitable for beginners.  The course is for over 18’s.

Due to the risks inherent in using sharp knives and axes, we ask that all attendees are able to take instruction and have strength and stability in their hands.

All tools and materials are provided.

Please wear sturdy closed toe shoes and practical clothes. Please bring your own packed lunch. Tea and coffee will be provided and available during breaks. Parking is free locally but can get very busy so leave enough time to find a space.
